Health Information
Manager/Technician

Health information managers/technicians plan and develop, organize, manage, and direct the medical information systems for health facilities. Responsibilities may include: 1) training and supervising the health information managers (HIM) staff; 2) developing systems for the efficient and confidential recording, retention, and retrieval of medical data; and 3) compiling statistical reports from patient medical records for medical, administrative, legal, and research purposes. Health information managers/technicians work closely with hospital administrators to monitor health-facility spending, physician-practice patterns, quality assessment, and research.

Work Environment
Hospitals employ about 60 percent of all health information managers/technicians. Other areas of employment are with medical group practices, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, nursing homes, clinics, ambulatory and long-term care facilities, state and federal health agencies, and other corporations.

Job Outlook
The need for complete, accurate, and timely clinical data has increased the demand for health information managers/technicians, especially in hospitals.

Salary
Salary depends on education, geography, job setting, and experience. Current salaries range from $31,000 - $58,000.

Length of Training/
Requirements

Students in health information manager programs must earn a four-year degree in health information management from a university with an accredited program. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is the official accrediting agency for health information management and technology.
