Occupational Therapy
Assistant/Aide

The occupational therapy assistant/ aide works with the occupational therapist to treat the patient who has a disability resulting from physical injury or trauma, disease, aging, mental illness, or alcohol/substance abuse. They may assist the patient with exercises, work with artificial limbs, provide therapeutic massage, or perform any other activities directed by the occupational therapist.

Work Environment
Occupational therapy assistants may work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics, private practices, schools, nursing homes, and in private homes under the employment of a home health care agency.

Job Outlook
The job outlook for occupational therapy assistants is excellent. There are not enough certified personnel to meet the current demand. More jobs are expected to be created by new rehabilitation centers, schools, and work sites.

Length of Training/
Requirements

To become an occupational therapy assistant, you must complete either a two-year associate degree or one of a limited number of certificate programs. These programs also include supervised clinical experience.

Salary
Salary depends on education, geography, job setting, and experience. Current salaries range from $22,000 - $30,000.
